Lake Wendouree has been a major social destination for residents for the past 150 years. Lake Wendouree is situated in the center of Ballarat and offers a wide range of attractions and recreational activities including the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, Steve Moneghetti walking and running track, cycling trails, bird watching, indigenous playground and excellent picnic and BBQ facilities. The track around the lake (named in honor of Ballarat marathon runner and Olympian Steve Moneghetti provides an interesting 6km challenge to walking, cycling and running enthusiasts who complete the circuit in their thousands each week, irrespective of the weather. For serious athletes, the record for running the 6km lap of the lake is 16 minutes and 10 seconds, set in 1992 by Marathon Olympian Steve Moneghetti.
